Massage my stress away

I have a very stressful job so I am always looking forward to my annual trip to the spa. It's a week of different massages and relaxing times at the spa. Its also a good time for my partner and I to get some relaxing treatments together so that we feel close and connected again. We try different spas in different regions to get a new holiday and have some time relaxing together. This blog is all about the different spa experiences we have tried and the different massage techniques that work for us. It's always good to get new ideas and inspiration.

Different Types of Massage Therapy to Help You Manage Your Fibromyalgia

Gary Peterson

Fibromyalgia is a condition that is associated with mood swings, disruptions in one's sleep patterns, chronic fatigue and extensive muscle pain. Usually, this condition is triggered by extreme psychological or physiological stress, it can also come about from a viral infection or an injury. The two main forms of treatment for this illness are talk therapy and medication. However, you can also ease your symptoms via massage therapy. What some patients tend to assume is that massages are purely for relaxation, but there are several kinds of massages that can help to relieve discomfort. Below are a few of the different types of massage therapy that can help you manage your fibromyalgia.

A hot stone massage

As the name implies, this type of massage utilises heated stones, but it is not merely about placing stones on one's back and hoping for the best. Instead, the masseuse will position these hot stones on strategic points along your body so that the localised warmth created helps with loosening tense muscles. In addition to this, the massage therapist will also have the stones in hand when carrying out the massage so that the heat from the rocks is transferred along your body. Relieving the tension in your muscles used heated stones should make them feel less tender, and this is great for people living with fibromyalgia.

 A deep tissue massage

Some people associate deep tissue massages with pain, but this is not entirely true. What people perceive as pain is the releasing of tension in the muscles by the use of elongated, kneading strokes, rhythmic tapping and joint movement. If your body is extremely tense, these manipulations can feel painful at the onset, but this does not mean that you should write it off as a potential way to manage your symptoms brought about by fibromyalgia. In essence, the manipulations work to enhance blood circulation and this helps with increasing the amount of oxygenated blood that reaches your taut muscles.

 A myofascial massage

Also known as a neuromuscular massage, this therapy concentrates on identifying the trigger points in your body and releasing the tension in them. Trigger points are sites in your musculoskeletal system that will generate pain when they are under pressure. During a myofascial massage, your masseuse will aim to release this compression and this helps with alleviating the pain in your compressed muscles. As a result, the muscular weakness is improved whereas the tenderness is decreased.
